Basement Water Management
Water Management brochure

Basement Groundwater and Foul-Waste Management Highlighted
Solutions for keeping basements and all below ground structures dry and free from damp are shown in the latest brochure from Delta Membrane Systems.

Entitled Packaged Pump Stations & Water Management Solutions, this brochure highlights a wide variety of products designed to tackle various tasks to ensure a basement stays dry and inviting.

These included standard sumps, retrofit products and a dual drainage sump. They all include built-in non-return valves and anti-air locking pumps.

Also featured is the Floormaxx range of submersible sewage lifting units, designed for the disposal of sewage water from toilets below the backwash level.

One of the more unusual designs is the new Delta Staufix backwater valve with rodent protection. Two vertical free-hanging backwater flaps are fitted to ensure that a building’s wastewater flows freely through the valve while preventing any backwater, or rodents, entering into the building.

Each product is represented pictorially, and full technical information is given.

Go With The Flow - Delta Terraxx
Delta Terraxx

Ideally suited to roof gardens or patio areas sitting immediately above a room, Delta-TERRAXX is a robust protection and drainage system from Delta Membrane Systems.

It features a dimpled sheet with a fused-on geotextile to form a highly effective drainage layer. Facing up, the geotextile acts as a filter protecting the air gap created by the dimpled sheet underneath.

Under a covering of gravel, chippings or soil, the heat-bonded permanent filtration geotextile keeps the dimple structure from being clogged up by sludge, ensuring that any excess water is drained away completely.

The integrated self-sealing edge makes the dimpled sheet easy to install, and helps prevent root penetration, while the smooth backing ensures that any impinging loads are distributed evenly across the waterproofing surface.

The added benefit of this material is that it allows workers to walk on any compression-resistant waterproofing layers during the construction phase, while at the same time protecting the waterproofing from mechanical damage and harmful exposure to heat.

Capable of withstanding extreme compression loads, up to 400kN/m2, Delta-TERRAXX can be installed at depths of up to 10m. It also offers a high drainage capacity, which prevents frost damage and encrustation.

Water vapour pressure is drained away through the structure, with the water drainage capacity being 3.1 litres/sec, exceeding that of the gravel or chipping layers.

The dimpled sheet comes in HDPE silver finish, with the dimple height being 9mm, creating an air gap of 7.7 litres/m2.

Delta-TERRAXX is supplied in 12.5m x 2.4m rolls.

Building Better Basements

Underground Basement Extention Turning unused, dingy basements into warm, inviting, useable living space can be easily achieved with the wide range of products from Delta Membrane Systems. Indeed, it is possible to create basements in properties that do not already have one, and, again, the Delta range will suit this new-build construction.

Delta MS-500 Cavity Drainage Membrane Included in the extensive range is the MS-500 which is a cavity drainage membrane for use on walls and floors as a waterproofing system. Made from high density polyethylene, the sheet is made up of an 0.6mm membrane with studs measuring some 8mm deep. Available in a clear option, it gives a compressive strength of greater than 250kN/m2, and is able to drain some 135 litres/min. of water per m run. Also available is MS-20, a brown dimpled drainage sheeting with particularly high drainage capacity and substantial compressive strength, make it ideal for basement floor applications. This is also suitable for high performance seepage layers in building and civil engineering construction

The Delta-MS collection also brings effective protection to foundation wall waterproofing against mechanical damage, and is suitable for both horizontal and vertical applications.

Delta Quattro

One of the more recent additions to the Delta range is Delta Geo-Drain Quattro, a four-ply drainage sheet suitable for thick waterproof coatings.

Quattro features a micro-perforated slip film which, together with the additional filter cloth, acts as a backup drainage layer behind the dimpled sheet to ensure that any water is drained off safely.

In addition, the slip film prevents the transmission of movement to the waterproof coating.

Delta FM for Damp

Specifically designed for flooring applications, Delta-FM protects against dampness and contamination.

Traditional damp proof membranes trap moisture and hold up work while the relative humidity of the concrete takes time to drop. Delta-FM allows work to continue immediately after placement thanks to a special low stud profile.

One of the applications that benefits from Delta-FM is in the installation of underfloor heating, which is becoming an increasingly popular option for the householder.

Delta Sump

To rid the basement area of any water that should collect from the cavity drainage membrane system, Delta Sump+Pump is available.

Capable of collecting groundwater from a cavity drainage membrane system, Delta Sump+Pump is one option available from a range by Delta Membrane Systems.Groundwater enters via the drained cavity of the membrane system and collects through the top opening of the Delta Sump. Water is then pumped by a float-activated submersible pump to mains drainage or other suitable outlet.

Built for durability and reliability, the system is offered with a range of accessories including high level alarms, battery back-up systems and non-return valves.

Delta PT

Delta PT is another high quality product from the company’s range. This high performance polyethylene membrane is extruded into a series of studs to create a continuous air gap behind the waterproof membrane.

On the face of the membrane is a welded mesh which allows plasters and renders to bond efficiently to achieve dry and durable finishes. Dab-fixing of board finishes is also an option.

Although primarily employed in internal applications, Delta-PT can also be used externally as a waterproof support for rendered finishes especially in exposed situations, where elevations of the building are subjected to water penetrations, salt-laden air, or are simply in need of a face-lift.

Bakery Uses it's Loaf!
Asda using Delta- NP Drain Damp problems that might occur in a below-ground level bakery at an Asda store in Walsall have been overcome by using Delta-NP Drain from Delta Membrane Systems.
The store at Shannon Mill is a mixed development scheme with apartments above. The bakery and car park for the store have been placed below ground level on a very wet site where severe water ingress and soil erosion were inevitable.
To overcome these problems, Delta-NP Drain membrane is fixed to the piled foundations of the store and apartment structure. The soil and between the piles is bound and held back by the Delta-NP Drain. Water is allowed to pass through, and this is drained down in the void in the middle of the membrane, into a channel cast into the ground slab for disposal.
Delta-NP Drain features a two-layer design. The first is a polyethylene drainage sheet with a dimple profile pattern, giving it high strength, durability, and increased drainage capacity. The dimple sheet keeps incoming water away from the structural sealing layer
Layer two is a polypropylene geotextile mat securely bonded to the dimple crowns by thermal welding.
The rot-resistant geotextile removes suspended soil particles and prevents clogging of the flow passages in the dimple texturing.
In total, some 1,500m2 of Delta-NP was used on this project which is a mixture of Grade 1 and Grade 3 basement constructions.

As Delta Project Manager, Paul Durham explains: “BS 8102 dictates how to keep water out of basement structures. Grade 1 is a car park where there is an acceptable amount of water ingress allowed. With Grade 3, for health reasons, no penetrating water or damp formation is permissible, and this is the grade demanded for the bakery.”
Apart from controlling the damp ingress, Delta-NP Drain is also being used to give stability to a 100mm dense concrete block wall.

The fixing heads of the plugs, which fix the Delta-NP Drain to the concrete piles, are also being used to tie into the finishing block wall. This then ensures the block wall is structurally tied to the piles themselves.
Fixing plugs in the Delta-NP Drain have a small hole in their heads. These allow the screwing-in of ties, which then sit in the wall’s mortar joints.
Overall, Delta-NP Drain has solved a number of significant issues in the construction of the bakery and car park at this branch of Asda.

Delta-FM is on Air
While traditional damp proof membranes trap moisture and hold up work while the relative humidity of the concrete takes time to drop, Delta-FM from Delta Membrane Systems allows work to continue immediately after placement thanks to a special low stud profile. One of the applications that benefits from Delta-FM is in the installation of underfloor heating, which is becoming an increasingly popular option for the householder.
This membrane isolates damp and contamination from the slab underneath, even if it is an old installation with no previous dpm, or a new pour, which is still ‘green’.

Traditional membranes have no air gap, making the total drying-out process of the slab time consuming. However, Delta-FM’s 3mm stud profile allows the membrane to effectively control the dampness, and eliminate the risk of contamination leeching from the concrete slab. Once the membrane has been laid, work can immediately continue with the rest of the installation.
This slim profile also minimises changes in floor levels. Made from virgin high-performance, high-density polyethylene, the membrane is supplied in rolls measuring 20m x 2m, and each roll features a 65mm flat tab on one side to lap and seal sheets. Other features include good chemical resistance, zero root penetration, rot resistance, and the ability to operate in temperatures ranging from -30oC to +80oC.
A variety of floor finishes can be applied over the sheet. These include T&G wood sheets directly onto the membrane or on joists, 50mm screed, Ardex A35 fast drying screed, poured concrete, laminated floors, and old or new stone slabs. All of these can be upgraded with thermal or sound insulation to conform to Approved Document L and Document E of the Building Regulations.

Water Shortages.
Delta Single Sump Capable of collecting groundwater from a cavity drainage membrane system, Delta Sump+Pump is available from Delta Membrane Systems. Groundwater enters via the drained cavity of the membrane system and collects through the top opening of the Delta Sump. Water is then pumped by a float-activated submersible pump to mains drainage or other suitable outlet.

The Delta Sump is delivered to site with all internal pipework pre-installed. This means that installation is particularly easy, a simple screw-on fitting is all that is necessary to connect the pump.
The unit is lowered into the excavation and all pipework and cable duct connections are made. The pump station is filled with water to prevent floatation, then back-filled with 100mm concrete around the sump to form part of the floor slab. An access cover is set over the sump for maintenance purposes. Discharge pipework and cable ducts can be installed in either Heliflex armoured hose, 32mm solvent-welded drainage pipe or class C discharge pipework. Built for durability and reliability, the system is offered with a range of accessories including high level alarms, battery back-up systems and non-return valves.
The alarm will warn if a high level situation occurs, and is supplied with an internal battery ‘for life’ to protect against power outages.

Two further back-up facilities are also offered, the Delta Power Pack and the Delta Power Plus. The Delta Power Pack is continuously being trickle-charged under normal conditions, and will automatically switch over to battery power if required.
For greater back-up capacity, the Delta Power Plus unit is offered. Up to ten units can be added, with one extra unit capable of pumping some 20,000 litres.

Leaning Towards Delta-MS
Delta MS in action Offered as an efficient and cost-effective alternative to traditional sub-base courses made from lean concrete, Delta-MS is a sub-base course from Delta Membrane Systems.
This dimpled sheet is made from high-density polyethylene, and is supplied in roll form for quick and easy laying without the need for costly equipment or additional excavation. Resistant to acids, alkalines, oils and solvents, the material is capable of handling high compressive strengths in the region of 250kN/m2.
The design of the sheet, which features some 1,800 dimples/m2, ensures good pressure distribution and low point loads. It has the additional benefit of protecting the foundation slab from rising damp, and preventing cement grout from seeping into the ground.
Each sheet overlaps the next by at least 20mm to ensure an effective seal, and specially-designed spacers ensure steel reinforcement sits above the membrane at a consistent level. For applications where a fair-faced concrete finish is required, spacers are also used between the lower and upper reinforcement meshes, again to ensure the gap measurement is maintained throughout the installation.

A variety of rolls sizes is available, 2, 2.4 and 3m wide in lengths of 20m.

According to Delta Membrane Systems, those using Delta-MS can, compared with the lean concrete alternative, expect cost savings of 70-80% in materials, and up to 6% in application.

DELTA-PT > Fit for the Purpose.
Delta PT in action One of the more common problems encountered in refurbishment work is that of damp, and among the wide range of solutions offered by Delta Membrane Systems is Delta-PT.
Delta-PT is watertight, and resistant to high and low temperature extremes (-30oC to +80oC). It will also stand-up to the adverse effects of acids, alkalis, oil and solvents, and is approved for use in drinking water applications.
The 8mm studs serve a dual purpose, isolating the damp wall from the new plaster and decorative finishes, and allowing ventilation of the wall for permanent dampness control. Ventilation gaps located at both the top and bottom of the system allow circulation for this purpose. Alternatively, the air gap can be vented externally via a passive air vent installed in the wall.

To further enhance the system’s performance, the company offers the Delta-PT Profile which can be used at both the upper and lower edges of the membrane. This Profile has ventilation slots incorporated into the design, to ensure that effective ventilation is provided at all times. The Profile section also acts as a guide for plaster or render coats. Although primarily employed in internal applications, Delta-PT can also be used externally as a waterproof support for rendered finishes especially in exposed situations, where elevations of the building are subjected to water penetrations, salt-laden air, or are simply in need of a face-lift.

DAMPNESS GETS ON QUATTRO'S WICK.
Delta Quattro To further enhance the dampness protection qualities its
Delta-Geo-Drain drainage sheet, Delta Membrane Systems now offers Delta-Geo-Drain Quattro.
Previously, the sheet was made up of a slip film, a dimpled sheet with integrated self-sealing edge, and a permanent-filtration geo textile. With Quattro, the slip film features micro-perforation to allow any moisture between the film itself and the waterproofed substrate to permeate through. This slip film now also has a fleece, or laminated cloth, between the film itself and the dimpled sheet. This fleece will soak-up the moisture, and then act as a wick to drain the moisture to the ground drainage.
Delta-Geo-Drain Quattro is a protection and drainage system, which offers maximum safety for thick viscoplastic coatings, even if driving rain is able to penetrate through a poorly installed upper edge trim. In a completely watertight system, this rainwater would exert hydrostatic pressure on the waterproof coating.
However, the micro-perforated slip film that, along with the additional filter cloth, acts as a backup drainage layer behind the dimpled sheet to ensure water drains safely and effectively.
The slip film plays a further role, it prevents the transmission of movement to the waterproof coating. Installation is simple and straightforward. Supplied in roll-form, Delta-Geo-Drain Quattro is applied to the waterproofed surface without any need for special grade backfill.
An integrated self-sealing edge ensures precise installation, and a specially designed drainage/holding clip is also available to speed up the installation process and promote effective drainage. It keeps water from accumulating between the thick coating and the slip film, effectively preventing the build-up of water pressure on the waterproof coating. It has the added benefit of effectively draining off methane and radon gases.
Standard roll size for the Quattro is 12.5m x 2m, and it offers a compressive strength of some 400kN/m2.
Suitable applications for the sheet are wide and varied. With the growing popularity of creating basements in properties, Delta-Geo-Drain Quattro is well suited to retrofit and refurbishment applications.

It can also be used in a wide range of other domestic, commercial, industrial and retail applications, and is finding increasing popularity in the education and healthcare sectors where refurbishment of older properties necessitates effective damp proofing.

The product is also widely specified for new-build work where dampness could be a problem owing to the adjoining land or climate conditions.

ROOF UNDERLAY FOR METAL ROOFS OR CLADDING
Delta Trela ROOF UNDERLAY EASES CORROSION AND NOISE PROBLEMS
Effective protection against corrosion and moisture is promised with the Delta-Trela underlay from Delta Membrane Systems.

Trapped water under metal roofing can soon produce corrosion problems, which will adversely affect the working effectiveness of the roof, produce leaking problems, and reduce the aesthetic qualities.
All of these problems can be solved by Delta-Trela which prevents moisture build-up and stops corrosion. It also has the added benefit of absorbing rainfall noise. The two-part construction is made up of a base sheet (Delta-Vent S) which is a three-ply spun-bonded polypropylene breather underlay, which is covered by an 8mm thick dimple-textured random-fibre mat which provides both an air gap and effective method of drainage. The complex structure of the dimpled spacer mat allows the use of standard fixing clips, and gives freedom to the metal cladding to expand and contract with temperature changes.

Delta-Trela can be used in all types of metal-clad pitched roofs and walls. It allows residual water vapour in rafters and sheathing to escape, thanks to the high permeability of the base sheet. With noise pollution becoming an increasingly important factor in materials specification, Delta-Trela again offers benefits. It reduces the transmission of noise of rain and hail pelting against the metal surface by up to 8dB, figures backed up by tests carried out by the Scientific and Technical Construction Centre in Brussels. Installation time reductions are another bonus from this system. It can be installed in any direction required, so structural details are not a problem.

Fire resistance figures given by the company show that Delta-Trela has a B2 rating/DIN 4102. In addition to the standard Delta-Trela, the company also offers Delta-Trela Plus. This option has an integrated self-adhesive strip to further ease installation of the sheet to the roof’s sub-structure.

Standard roll size for both options is 30m x 1.5m, with each roll weighing-in at 17kg.

Delta BBA Certification Renewed

BBA Certified

Waterproofing products from Delta Membrane’s extensive System 500 range have had their BBA Certification renewed. Four of the products are included in Agrement Certificate No. 00/3742.

They include Delta-MS20 – a moulded HDPE sheet used as damp-proofing on walls, floors and arches to support a dry lining or flooring. It can be employed in new construction or in existing buildings over contaminated or damp background. It has a 20mm stud profile for maximum drainage capacity.

Also covered by the certificate is Delta-MS500. This is a clear moulded HDPE sheet (8mm profile) that can be used as damp-proofing on walls, floors and vaulted ceilings – again in new-build or refurbishment work over a contaminated or damp background. It can be used to support a dry lining or floor.

Delta-FM is the third product covered. Specifically designed to combat dampness and contamination in flooring applications, Delta-FM allows various floor finishes to be achieved thanks to a special low stud profile (3mm) that minimises changes in floor levels but still provides an air gap to achieve damp pressure equalisation.

Completing the quartet is Delta-PT which can be used on internal or external walls and vaulted ceilings as damp-proofing, and as a support for plastering, dry lining or rendering.

As you might expect, there is plenty of legislation and advice guiding us the right way to ensure the creation of a basement area is to certain standards. For example, BS8102: 1990 is the Code of Practice, which looks at ‘Protection of Structures Against Water from the Ground’. A more elaborate expansion of this standard can be found in CIRIA Report 139 ‘Water Resisting Basements’. Measured against these industry standards, Delta’s range of membranes are classed as a Type ‘C’ (Drained protection), and considered the most effective and trouble free option.

Key factors assessed in the Agrement Certificate include resistance to water and water vapour, resistance to salt transfer, resistance to impact, loads, and durability.
