Delta Membrane Systems Limited were delighted to have been contacted by DIY SOS to give assistance on a Big Build Project.
The project involved turning a street of derelict homes into a village for war veterans.
In 2014 Nick Knowles and his team took over Canada Street (a near derelict row of former mill worker’s cottages) in Miles Platting, Manchester. Canada Street comprised of terraced properties, many of which had been steel shuttered and abandoned. The properties which had not been abandoned were in desperate need of renovation.
Nick Knowles during a chance meeting with Walking with the Wounded founder Ed Parker entered the idea of converting thousand of empty properties across Britain into homes for homeless ex-service personal and their families.
Manchester City Council with the support of Haig Housing Association, charities, builders and volunteers (including Delta Membrane Systems Limited) embarked on the £3.5 million transformation. The project even got the royal seal of approval when Princes William and Harry got involved.
One of Delta’s Technical Consultants designed a Delta Membrane System which would design out the effects of latent salt contamination and residual dampness within the existing walls.
The properties on Canada Street were dilapidated and over time, a combination of external defects leading to rain water ingress and long term saturation of the structure and lack of occupancy leading to condensation and activation of hygroscopic mineral salts within the walls had led to damp conditions which rendered the buildings unusable.
Delta Membrane Systems Limited teamed up with RTC Preservation (a Delta Registered Installer who volunteered their services to fit the Delta Membrane System).
Once an action plan and remedial specification had been agreed RTC Preservation undertook the remedial works.
Once the external defects had been fixed and the structure made safe, the internal faces of the damp salt contaminated walls were sprayed using Polysil TG500 salt inhibiting/anti lime primer and lined using Delta PT meshed membrane, which allowed internal finishes to be applied safely and directly over the face of the Delta membrane.
The results were instantaneous and spectacular.
Canada Street has been transformed and a community created, Delta Membrane Systems Limited are privileged and humbled to have been part of this process.
Great work DIY SOS and everyone who took part in this amazing life changing project.
